It’s a Wrap!

February 25, 2011 Leave a comment

Following a 6-2 opening round loss, Clay Helms could no longer ignore his shoulder saying, “enough,” and he injury-defaulted to his consolation round opponent and withdrew from the State Open tournament. With that tough decision, the curtain came down on the competitive phase of the WHS 2010-11 wrestling season. Congratulations to the entire team for the very successful season and another huge thank you to all the fans, friends and family who turned out to support the Warriors!

Coach Foldeak will call an after school meeting sometime in the next couple of weeks — timing will depend on the arrival date of his daughter — to talk with all the wrestlers about off-season wrestling, weight-lifting, and camps. We’ll also collect any equipment — headgear, singlets, warm-ups, etc. that you still have. We will announce that date here, and on Facebook.

If you still have anything in the team-room, you need to clear it out, bring it home, wash it, and get it ready to hand in. Do that Monday, as it won’t be very long before the staff at the high school will need to clean the room up in preparation for spring sports.

Finally, save the 29th of March for the team banquet. More on that later.

Warriors score 50, finish 17th; Helms takes 3rd @ 160, qualifies for Opens

February 20, 2011 Leave a comment

The Warriors scored 50 team points at the State Class L tournament in Bristol over the weekend and had one place-winner: Clay Helms at 160. After a tough semi-final loss, Helms wrestled back to earn 3rd place and qualify for the State Opens this week in New Haven. Full brackets for the tournament are posted here.

The 50 team points is the most the Warriors have scored in the last 5 years. Several wrestlers had wins in the early rounds to boost the team score, including Estevan Garcia, Drew Venditti, Charles Wong, Matt Hill, Mitch Feehley, Drew Kennedy, Colin Lillis, Sam Somers, and Joey Fraccaroli — and all the Warriors fought hard throughout their matches.

Thanks to the wrestlers, parents and fans who came out to support the team throughout the tournament.

Thanks to the Boosters and Kiwanis for their support of the Warrior Wrestling Program! The wrestlers hit the phones hard on Wednesday night after practice and did an excellent job!

We still have a few days left to fund-raise, so here’s a link to the order form in case anyone wants to do some post-event selling.

Transportation to/from State Class L Tournament

February 16, 2011 Leave a comment

Varsity wrestlers will ride a bus from WHS to Bristol Eastern Friday afternoon. Parents will provide return transportation for all wrestlers from Bristol Eastern. Any wrestler who continues to wrestle past the opening rounds into Saturday morning will need a parent to provide transportation back to Bristol Eastern for the 8:00 AM weigh-ins and then transportation back home after competition ends. There will be no buses on Saturday.
