Many thanks to the managers (Ella Bartlett and Taylor Runco), parents and fans who turned out to support the team on a long day of wrestling.

Wrestlers, take advantage of the break until Monday’s practice to rest and heal. As Coach noted, we will lift right after school and then do some running before a film session. No 5:30 practice Monday. On Tuesday, lifting right after school and we will then hold 5:30 practice for the remainder of the week. Watch the website for any changes/updates.

Personal Hygiene Reminder

December 29, 2010 1 comment

This post is for parents. We need your help. Wrestlers sweat. They wrestle — often with multiple partners over the course of a single practice. If they’re not clean when they start, you can imagine what they’re like after a couple of hours of wrestling.

If your son isn’t showering immediately upon returning home from practice (assuming he hasn’t showered at WHS), he needs to shower, using soap and shampoo, immediately when he comes home. If he isn’t bringing all his workout gear and towels home every day and coming to practice with clean gear and a clean towel for the next day, he needs to do that too.

If your son has a skin condition — and we have noticed the presence of ringworm on several wrestlers — it needs to be treated fast, before it spreads to other athletes. Ringworm is easily treated with over-the-counter medications — but it won’t go away by itself.

The simplest way to prevent ringworm — or other skin conditions — is to be clean. We wash the mats every day before practice. If we could, we would wash the wrestlers too — but that’s not going to happen any time soon, so they need to take care of this themselves. A firm reminder from you would be appreciated.

New Additions to the Reference Page

December 29, 2010 Leave a comment

We’ve added a few new links to the Reference page. Check them out.

From Cary Kolat’s excellent site, a series of three YouTube videos associated with one of his blog entries:

Terry Brands vs. Jeff Prescott – constant pressure on your opponent pays off

Mark Schultz – scoring out of a front headlock and finishing a high-crotch

Cary Kolat vs Elbrus Tedeev – movement, changing tie-ups, level changes in a world-class match

And another Kolat blog entry featuring two videos of Tom Brands fighting off his back, recovering and winning a match at the Big Ten Championships. Part 1 is here and Part 2 is here.

We also added a link to an article from the December 2010 issue of Wrestling Insider Magazine on the prevention of wrestling skin infections. See the Personal Hygiene Reminder post above, as well.

Thursday Bus Time for Trumbull Duals: 6:45 AM – Matches begin at 9:00 AM

December 29, 2010 Leave a comment

Be at the field house with all your equipment (shoes, undergarment, singlet, headgear, and mouth guard if you need it, ready to go, at 6:45 AM. Trumbull had a decent concession for its JV tournament a couple of weeks ago, but wrestlers might want to bring a snack and something to drink. We were not allowed to bring in a case of water generously donated by some parents, but the wrestlers were able to bring in individual bottles of water in their backpacks.

We’re wrestling 5 dual meets against Trumbull, Fairfield Ludlowe, Westhill, Middletown and East Lyme. Normally we wrestle FCIAC opponents first, but we’ll be wrestling all five teams regardless. If we start on time at 9:00, we should be home sometime between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
